The Blue Hole, Gozo

The Blue Hole in Gozo – A Must-Dive Site for Scuba Divers and Freedivers Alike
If you’re planning a diving holiday in Malta, make sure the Blue Hole in Gozo is at the top of your bucket list.
Widely regarded as one of the most spectacular dive sites in the Mediterranean, the Blue Hole offers an unforgettable underwater adventure, combining dramatic topography, excellent visibility, and thriving marine life.
Whether you’re a scuba diver or a seasoned freediver, this natural wonder is sure to impress.
Where Is the Blue Hole in Gozo?
Located just off the rocky coastline of Dwejra Bay on Gozo’s western shore, the Blue Hole is a vertical shaft carved into the limestone bedrock by thousands of years of wind and wave erosion. It’s adjacent to the famous (now collapsed) Azure Window and close to the Inland Sea — another top dive site.

How to Access the Blue Hole
The Blue Hole is easily accessible from land, making it a convenient and popular choice for both shore divers and freedivers. To reach it:
- Travel to Dwejra Bay, near the village of San Lawrenz on Gozo.
- There’s a pathway across the limestone rock that leads down to the entry point.
- Divers typically gear up in the car park and walk a short distance over flat rock to the water’s edge.
There’s also a natural rock pool at the surface — about 10 metres wide and several metres deep — which leads into the open sea via a large archway at around 7 to 10 metres depth.
How Experienced Do You Need to Be?
The Blue Hole caters to intermediate to advanced scuba divers and experienced freedivers due to its depth, rocky entry point, and sometimes strong currents. While the dive starts at a shallow depth, it quickly drops off to over 40 metres, so good buoyancy control and comfort in deep water are essential.
- Scuba divers should ideally be Advanced Open Water certified or equivalent.
- Freedivers should have previous experience diving in open water and be comfortable descending to depths of at least 10-20 metres.
That said, with a local dive guide, confident Open Water divers can also enjoy the site while staying within safe depth limits.

What Makes the Blue Hole So Special?
This dive is all about jaw-dropping underwater scenery:
Excellent Visibility: The Blue Hole regularly boasts visibility of 30 metres or more, making it ideal for photography and videography.
The Arch: Swim through a stunning archway that connects the Blue Hole to the open sea. Light filters beautifully through the structure, creating a magical atmosphere.
Chimney: A vertical tunnel known as the “Chimney” allows divers to ascend or descend from 18m to 8m.
Walls and Overhangs: Explore dramatic vertical walls covered in sponges, corals, and marine growth.
Marine Life: Spot groupers, bream, moray eels, octopus, nudibranchs, scorpionfish, and — if you’re lucky — tuna or barracuda cruising past.
