Gain Confidence as a Beginner Diver: Tips from Our London Scuba Diving Course Leaders
In this guide, our PADI instructors share their beginner tips on how to succeed and feel confident on your scuba diving course in London.
Starting one of your first scuba diving courses in London is an exciting experience, but it’s completely normal to feel a little nervous. We’ve all been there!
Our experienced PADI instructors understand how beginners feel when they first step into the water. We’re here to guide you through each part of your journey, helping you grow from a complete beginner to a certified PADI Open Water Diver – with confidence and a smile.
Why Confidence is Key as a Beginner Diver
Confidence plays a big role in how much you enjoy your training. Feeling calm and focused underwater makes it easier to practise new skills, handle your diving equipment, and follow your instructor’s guidance. Mastering your nerves and learning to stay calm becomes even more important as you start venturing out into the open ocean.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The good news is, no one expects you to be 100% confident on day one of your scuba diving course! Confidence is something you build over time, with the right diving training, patient instructors, and supportive surroundings, just like you’ll find here at Oyster Diving.
“Every diver started with a single breath under the water. Trust yourself and your training, stay calm, and let the beauty of the underwater world show you the way and build your confidence with every dive.” Sean, PADI scuba diving instructor at Oyster Diving

Common Beginner Diver Worries (and Why You Shouldn’t Stress)
If you’re feeling nervous about starting your scuba diving course in London, you’re not alone. Many beginner divers share the same concerns. Here are some of the most common worries we hear from our students, and why they’re nothing to stress about.
Breathing Underwater
Taking your first breath through a regulator can feel strange, but remember: you’ll practise this several times in a calm, shallow pool before ever heading into open water. Your instructor will guide you step by step, helping you get comfortable at your own pace.
Handling the Gear
Diving equipment might look complicated, but on our scuba diving courses, we’ll break it all down into simple parts. You’ll learn how to set up and use each piece, with patient guidance. By the end of the course, using your BCD, dive computer, and regulator will feel second nature.
“When it comes to equipment, start with simple pieces that are easy to use. Don’t buy complex technical gear before you’ve done some diving, and a simple dive computer is best when starting out. Don’t rent one, buy it – it will pay for itself.
“Your mask is your most important personal kit. Buy the best you can and make sure it fits you. If you need glasses, get lenses fitted.” David, PADI IDC Staff Instructor at Oyster Diving
Mastering Buoyancy
Worried about floating up or sinking down? There’s no reason to be. Buoyancy control is one of the core skills taught in every PADI Open Water course, and it’s something you’ll improve with practice.
“During my PADI Open Water course, my instructor told us: ‘If you see me going up and down, remember this: I’m not moving…’ We were like yo-yos in drysuits! This has stayed with me and I use it when teaching new Open Water students.” Jonathan, PADI instructor at Oyser Diving
Keeping Up With the Group
All of our London scuba diving courses are designed for beginners, with small group sizes and supportive instructors. Everyone learns at their own speed, and no one expects you to be perfect. Progress is what matters!
“This isn’t a competition! It’s fun – enjoy it.” David, PADI IDC Staff Instructor at Oyster Diving
Tips from Our London PADI Instructors to Build Diving Confidence
Our PADI scuba diving instructors in London have helped hundreds of beginner divers gain confidence and succeed. Here are some of their top tips to help you feel comfortable and enjoy the journey to unforgettable diving adventures:
- Start with a Discover Scuba session: If you’re not ready to commit to a full course, a Discover Scuba session is the perfect low-pressure introduction. You’ll try out the equipment, take your first breaths underwater, and see how amazing scuba diving feels.
- Slow, steady breathing: Breathing calmly through your regulator is one of the easiest ways to stay relaxed. “Take it easy, breathe slowly and relax, move slowly and thoughtfully,” says David.
- Ask questions early and often: Your instructor is there to help! Whether you’re unsure about your dive computer, buoyancy, or safety drills, don’t be afraid to speak up. The more you understand, the more confident you’ll feel.
- Take your time during pool training: The pool is your safe space to practice and get comfortable with your diving equipment and the feeling of weightlessness. Don’t rush through – take the time to build strong foundational skills.
- Focus on one skill at a time: Scuba diving is learned step by step. Concentrate on the skill in front of you rather than worrying about what’s next. Confidence grows with every small success. “Dive shallow and love the ocean wildlife to build up your skills and experience,” says David.
